CAIR is a national Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization. In the letter, they state, “As an organization founded on the principle of freedom, we believe that advocating against bigotry and prejudice is a paramount duty of all Americans. We therefore call on you to affirm that Muslims in your school and community are the same as all other students, to engage with them and their community, and to address the very real and legitimate concerns that they have about Islamophobia and other forms of bigotry.” In the letter, the organization stated that incidents such as the “Islamophobia Day” event, which caused confusion about the event and its purpose, are detrimental to the development of civil discourse and hate crime. CAIR is recommending that the principal and vice principal distribute a memo to all students, staff, and parents of the school that the institution is committed to addressing Islamophobia and other forms of prejudice in the school and the community. “Today, while not all of our students are Muslim, we have many of them as our friends and colleagues. We urge all students to see the ‘Islamophobia Day’ as a hostile act against them and to speak out against it,” the letter stated. At the “Islamophobia Day” event, a number of high school students who were in attendance at the event held signs with messages such as, “Muslims go to hell,” and “Muhammad was a pedophile.” The event was advertised on the school’s Facebook page. Students were told to come in uniforms and write out their messages for “Islamophobia Day,” before the event took place. Superintendent Patrick Ferris released a statement regarding the event and to the general Muslim community in Lake Oswego. “We are taking this matter very seriously and have already begun an investigation of the circumstances surrounding the event
